📌Editor's note: Wondering if this is why our drinking water, which comes from the Neuse River, has smelled like sewage? Has anyone else noticed this recently?

On June 11, 2024, the community of Clayton, North Carolina, was confronted with an environmental concern when approximately 2,000 gallons of untreated sewage were inadvertently released. The spill occurred near the Buckhorn Branch Subdivision, specifically along Pansy Park and beside 240 Spotted Doe Dr¹. As a consequence, untreated wastewater was discharged from multiple residents' sewer service cleanouts¹.
The Town of Clayton responded promptly to the spill, ensuring that the discharge was contained at the entrance of a storm drainage pond located within the subdivision. Officials confirmed that none of the wastewater entered any state waters, mitigating the potential for broader environmental impact¹.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the incident and has been actively reviewing the matter. The town's swift action and transparent communication with residents and environmental agencies exemplify its commitment to environmental stewardship and public health.
As Clayton continues to navigate the challenges of rapid growth and urban development, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust infrastructure and diligent oversight. The town's ongoing investments in wastewater management, including the construction of the new Sam's Branch Water Reclamation Facility, are critical steps toward ensuring such events are prevented in the future².
